MLB- We are in the final week of the Major League season, and teams are battling for their playoff lives. In the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers have a one game lead on the Kansas City Royals. The Tigers had an 86-70 record entering Tuesday. Kansas City is 85-71 entering Tuesday. In the AL wild card, three teams are within two games. The Oakland A’s and the Royals atop the wild card standings with the Seattle Mariners two games behind. Oakland has an 86-70 record. On August 9th, Oakland was 72-44. Kansas City is looking for their first playoff appearance since 1985.
As for the Cardinals, they have clinched a playoff berth for what seems to be the twentieth consecutive year. The Cardinals have not yet clinched the division as of Tuesday, but have a 2.5 game cushion on Pittsburgh.
As for the Cubs, they have improved on their win total from last season. They are looking to the future with a trio of prospects. Third baseman Kris Bryant hit 43 home runs in the minor leagues with a .325 batting average. Jorge Soler is hitting over .300 since his call-up, and Javier Baez is a middle infielder with absurd power. Perhaps 2015 will be the start of something.
NFL- We are through three weeks of the NFL season, and there has been some excitement. The Chicago Bears are 2-1, featuring a comeback win at San Francisco. Rookie Kyle Fuller had two interceptions, and Brandon Marshall caught three touchdowns in a 28-20 victory. The Bears host the rival Packers this Sunday. Green Bay is 1-2, and coming off one of their worst losses in years, falling 19-7 to Detroit. Aaron Rodgers will look to bounce back, after being held to 162 yards passing in the loss.
Indianapolis is 1-2, but they were firing on all cylinders in a 44-17 win over Jacksonville. Andrew Luck made fantasy owners happy, throwing for 370 yards and four touchdowns.
College Football- Florida State is the number one team in the land, but faced some turmoil last week. Quarterback Jameis Winston, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, was suspended from last Saturday’s game against Clemson. Winston apparently stood up on a lunch table at a campus event and yelled a vulgar phrase. Winston has been involved in much more serious incidents off the field before, I’m a little surprised as to why this incident led to a suspension. Florida State went on to beat Clemson in overtime. Winston will play this week.
