MLB- We are now in the month of April, which means that the MLB season has begun. The Cubs and the Cardinals share identical 3-2 records entering the week. The teams began their season in Chicago for a three game series. The Cardinals would take game one, game two would be postponed, and the Cubs would take game three to earn a series split. On Sunday, both teams had dramatic wins. St. Louis would defeat Cincinnati 7-5 in 11 innings. Matt Carpenter hit the game-winning homer in the top of the inning. The Cubs trailed Colorado 5-4 in the ninth, when Dexter Fowler stepped up to the plate. With a runner on first, Fowler crushed 0-2 pitch into the second deck to give the Cubs a lead they would not relinquish, winning 6-5.
College Hoops- The college basketball season came to an end in Indianapolis with the Duke Blue Devils cutting down the nets. Coach Mike Krzyzewski won his fifth title, as Duke defeated Wisconsin 68-63. Wisconsin had all the momentum coming into the game, as they handed Kentucky their first and only loss to advance to the final. Duke got major contributions from four freshmen. In fact, 60 of Duke’s 68 points were scored by freshmen. Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor will most likely declare for the NBA Draft, and he could be the first overall pick. It was an incredible victory for the young Duke team, who defeated a veteran Wisconsin team, led by Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky.
NHL- The NHL playoffs are set. Here is a look at the first round matchups. In the Eastern Conference, Montreal will take on Ottawa; Tampa Bay will take on Detroit; the New York Rangers will play Pittsburgh, and the New York Islanders will play Washington. In the Western Conference, St. Louis will take on Minnesota; Chicago will face Nashville; the Ducks will play the Winnipeg Jets, and the Vancouver Canucks will battle with the Calgary Flames.
